Nancy Ellen Humes Atkins, 87, died October 6, 2013 in Huntsville, Alabama, surrounded by her loving family. Born January 18, 1926 to Karl and Phillis Humes on Watrous Avenue, Tampa, she graduated from the Academy of the Holy Names and the University of Tampa. She taught for 29 years at St. John’s Episcopal Parish Day School. Nancy was an avid reader, a life-long learner, and an accomplished artist. A true Floridian, her favorite destination was the Gulf of Mexico where she would go shelling and looking for sharks’ teeth. She is survived by three daughters, Robin and Linden Atkins of Tampa, Julie (Doug) Robertson of Huntsville, four grandchildren, James and Caroline Cooper (Tony Fernandez), Halley and John Martin, and son-in-law, Brent Martin. She will be missed for her optimism and love of life and beauty. At her request, there will be no service.
