Robert Wilson Blair, 82, of Athens, died September 8, 2021 at Limestone Health Facility. Mr. Blair was born August 23, 1939 in Limestone County Alabama. He attended Athens city schools and was a life-long member of First Presbyterian Church.
His voice has filled the airwaves during Athens High School football games for over 47 seasons. Beginning in 1972, he became the eyes and ears of the Golden Eagles and Eaglettes basketball teams. For years, Wilson Blair has been better known as "the voice of the Golden Eagles."
His work as the Athens High School public address announcer and radio voice on WYNN as the color commentator for the Golden Eagles' football games has been the cornerstone of Blair's career at Athens High School.
During the early 1960s, Blair provided color commentary for the Limestone County Basketball Game of the Week. In the early 1970s, he volunteered as the public address announcer for the Athens High School basketball games.
In 1976, Blair was hired as the head maintenance person at Athens High School, where he remained until retirement. In addition to his radio and public address work at Athens High School basketball and football games, Blair traveled with the Athens College Bears from 1962-65 as an assistant team manager. He has been the public address announcer for the Class A-2A State Track Meet for the past two years and a volunteer with the Athens-Limestone County Special Olympics. He was also active with the Limestone County EMA spending countless evenings on the lookout for dangerous storms.
Blair was a valued member of First Presbyterian Church and has been an active member since 1957. Over the years his passion in the church was in Men’s ministry. He has served at the leadership level in the North Alabama Men’s council numerous times and was always active. Most recently in 2019 Blair was elected to serve as the Vice President for National Men’s council for the Presbyterian Church USA. Blair recorded attendance of both Sunday School and Worship for decades, as well as ensuring that church doors were open for service. He will be missed all over Athens and Limestone County.
Mr. Blair is preceded in death by his parents, Mae Copeland and Floyd Wesley Blair; brothers Doug Blair and Wade Blair; nephew, Jim Worsham and great-nephew, Jackson Blair.
Survivors include one sister, Nita Worsham and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and one great-great nephew.
Visitation will be from 12:45 to 1:45 Tuesday, September 14th at McConnell Funeral Home followed by a graveside service at 2 p.m. at Roselawn Cemetery with Rev. Dayton Wilson officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to First Presbyterian Church and Copeland Presbyterian Church.
