Sherman Theron Webster, 92 passed away Sunday, March 17, 2019 at Bill Nichols State Veterans Home in Alexander City, Alabama. He was born October 22, 1926 in Fayette, AL to Sherman Martin Webster and Nancy Alice Mills. He grew up along Luxpallila Creek, meaning "flying turtle". He then moved to Eldridge, working hard on the family farm and as he got older, helping his Father with his rural mail route.
Sherman served our country in WW II. He first served on the net tender USS Anaqua, then upon re-enlistment for another three years, he served on the submarine USS Becuna.
After serving his country, he married his first wife, Pearl White of Jasper, Alabama. The couple moved to California where he worked in the railroad industry and then for Fletcher Aviation. They started their family with two boys, first Bill, then Roddy, while living in El Monte. They then settled back to Alabama in Belle Mina, where Steve, their third son was born. Donna, their only daughter, was born after moving to Tanner.
Sherman worked for thirty years at the Marshal Space Flight Center as a Specialty Welder and Metallurgist on the Redstone, Jupiter, Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, and Space Shuttle programs for NASA. After retirement from NASA, he worked as a salesman for Spencer Implement Company in Athens.
Sherman loved camping with his family and friends. He and his family were members of the Arrowhead Camping Club, along with life-long friends George Braly and family. He loved to cook breakfast for his camping buddies, and that usually included biscuits. He had a "green thumb", loved outdoors, planting things, especially a garden, Amaryllis, and Day Lilies- lots of them. He loved people, especially his family.
Sherman was a very active member of Tanner United Methodist Church and a Lay Speaker. He was also active in the Decatur District of the North Alabama Conference.
He worked with “Volunteers in Missions” in Haiti and Bolivia. He was a member of Toastmaster International and a volunteer for Limestone County Department of Human Resources. Being a humble Christian man, Sherman was always helping others. He also served his community by giving of his time to The Limestone Red Cross, The Association of Retarded Citizens, Limestone County Hospice, and served as a arbitrator for The Huntsville Better Business Bureau.
Sherman was married to Pearl thirty-eight years before losing her to cancer in 1988. He later became reacquainted with, and married his second wife, Dorothy Jones of Lamar County. They lived in both Tanner and Vernon for many years and were married for over twenty-two years. While in Vernon he served as Chairman of the Lamar County Board of Registrars.
Sherman is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, James Earl Webster and Kenneth Martin Webster, two sisters, Dorothy Webster Hammack, and Rachel Bryant, his two sons, William Sherman Webster, and Jerry Stephen Webster. He is also preceded by both wives, Pearl and Dorothy.
He is survived by one son, Roderick (Susanne) Webster of Grand Bay, AL and one daughter, Donna (Mike) Goodlett of Auburn, AL, Dorothy’s children, Wanda (David) Woods, Teresa (Verlin) Edwards, both of Tuscaloosa, and Danny (Lynn) Webster, Vernon, fifteen grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren.
Sherman lived with Donna and Mike in Auburn and with Roddy and Susie in Grand Bay for three years. He subsequently received outstanding care at Morningside Assisted Living of Auburn, Oak Park Nursing Home, Auburn, and Bill Nichols State Veterans Home, Alexander City. The family would like to acknowledge and thank the administration and the care-givers of all three facilities.

Sherman's "Celebration of Life" service will be Friday, March 22, 2019 at 2 p.m.at Tanner United Methodist Church.
Visitation will be from 1-2 p.m. at the church. Burial will be at Roselawn Cemetery in Athens.

Grandsons: Hunter Goodlett, Mark Woods, and Great-Nephew: Trent Schaffer
