Athens, AL – Shirley Hooks Crawford of Athens, AL passed away on May 7, 2014 at the age of 76 years old. She was surrounded by family and friends as she departed this life. She will always be remembered for her beautiful smiles.
A Memorial Service will be held Saturday May 10, 2014 at 10 A.M. at McConnell Funeral Home with Brother Eric Pugh officiating. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery where she will be placed with her late husband of 44 years, GYSGT (Ret) Edgar William Crawford.
She was born in Millen, Georgia on November 1, 1937. She was the eighth of nine children of the late Lester and Maxie Lanier Hooks. She attended a business school and served as a bookkeeper and manager for two large retail stores. She was a devoted and caring mother. She loved to go for long rides and her passion was working and caring for her yard and flowers. She was preceded in death by her sister Maxine Hooks and her brothers Sidney, Cubby, and Lloyd.
She is survived by daughters Alice Faye Crawford of Atlanta, GA, Deborah Ann McMurtrey and husband Charles Leonard McMurtrey III of Athens, AL; son Edgar William Crawford, Jr and wife Kayo Crawford of Hawaii; sisters Rebecca Barbel of Fayetteville, GA, Mary Meyer of Peachtree City, GA, and Haddie Cochran and husband John of Blue Ridge, GA; brother Lester Hooks of Millen, GA; grandchildren Jasmine Hanuka Crawford, Edgar James Shion Crawford, Rebecca Ann McMurtrey, and Charles Leonard McMurtrey IV; and several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Shirley Crawford to the Shriners Hospital for Children, 950 West Faris Road, Greenville, SC 29605-4277.
