Mrs. Wenzel died February 28, 2011 at her home surrounded by loved ones.
Mrs. Wenzel was born on November 9, 1935 in Nashville, Tenn,. to William S. Shelton and Mable Marie Gary Shelton. She was raised in Athens and graduated from Athens
High School in 1953. She moved to California in 1956 where she married Jack Wenzel. Mrs. Wenzel worked for Hughes Aircraft Company in Fullerton, California for 30 years, before retiring to Yucca Valley, California. In 2001 she moved back to her hometown of Athens, Alabama.
Shirley was a beloved mother, Grammie, GeeGee, sister, aunt and friend. She loved to spend time with her family, cooking, decorating, reading and watching football—especially Alabama football. She was a ready listener, with a warm smile and never ending supply of love for her family. Her grandchildren were her delight and joy.
Mrs. Wenzel was preceded in death by her parents; sisters Norma Jean Whitman and Patricia Ann Martin; and former husband Jack Wenzel.
Survivors include daughter Mishel Wenzel Phillips and son-in-law Todd Phillips of Omaha, NE; granddaughter Ashleigh Marie Baker and husband John Baker of Leadville, CO; grandson Zachary Sperou Ferguson of Denver, CO; great-grandsons Troy and Merritt Baker; and her beloved cousins, nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Todd Phillips, Zachary Ferguson, Rick Martin, Ken Carpenter, Johnny Evans and John Mac Evans.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorial donations be made to Good Samaritan Hospice of Madison, 540 Hughes Road, Suite 12, Madison, AL 35758.
