Sidney (Sid) Campbell, 82 of the Hayes Mill Community Athens, died Wednesday, February 26th at his residence surrounded by his family. Sid was born May 24th,1937 in Limestone County to Bailes and Annie Mae Hambrick Campbell. Sid was a long time member of New Garden Pentecostal Church where he had served as a Deacon and Sunday School Teacher. He currently attended First Church of Athens. He was retired from Winn-Dixie with over 28 years of service. After retirement form Winn-Dixie, Sid started Campbell’s used cars and operated it for several years. Sid also worked at Bates Grocery. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and brother. Sid was preceded in death by his parents, by one brother, James Campbell and one sister-in-law, Ella Ruth Campbell.
Sid is survived by his wife of 63 years, Betty Ray Gooch Campbell; by two sons, Dewayne Campbell (Debbie) of Athens and Barry Campbell (Candy) of New Market. He is survived by two grandchildren; Bradley Campbell (Lori) of Elkmont and Kristan Campbell of Athens; Two great grandchildren, Breanna Campbell and Alexis Campbell both of Elkmont; by four great-great grandchildren, Isiah Campbell and Miciah Campbell of Elkmont, Mya and Cameron Campbell both of Athens; by one brother, Donnie Campbell of Athens; two sisters, Martha Hagood of Priceville and Betty Ledlow of Decatur and by several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be on Sunday, March 1st at 3 pm at McConnell Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Rick Craft and Pastor Bruce Johnson officiating. Interment will follow in Roselawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday, February 29th from 6:00 – 9:00 pm at McConnell Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be Dewayne Campbell, Barry Campbell, Bradley Campbell, Jeff Campbell, Luke Campbell, Randy Campbell and LaDon Campbell.
Honorary Pallbearers will be T.J. Morris, Bob Reynolds, Doug Wales, Shorty Harris and James Silas.
