Ms. Betty Jean Wilson passed peacefully on March 27, 2026. Born in 1933, Betty was the daughter of Boykin and Elizabeth Wilson, both in the medical profession, and she grew up primarily in Albany, NY but also in various places in Georgia with extended family during World War II. Betty helped care for her younger sister Dixie until she left to attend the University of Georgia, where she graduated Summa Cum Laude in Zoology. It was at UGA where Betty met Ray Simonton, and following their marriage in 1956 they settled in Griffin, GA, Ray’s hometown.
It was in Griffin where Betty got her adult footing, volunteering with the Play to Learn School for children with special needs, being active in Griffin First United Methodist Church, co-founding the local chapter of the League of Women Voters, and serving on the new Flint River Regional Library Board for many years. Betty served the Griffin community with intention and a very sharp mind, and she was guided by a deep appreciation of care and justice for all people.
Betty served her family with intention and care as well, raising two sons in a supportive and loving home. After 26 years of marriage, Betty and Ray divorced, and she moved to Decatur, GA where she went back to school, worked as a paralegal and built a new life. At 75 Betty met Wade Lowe, and they enjoyed a wonderful twelve year relationship. Betty and Wade were kindred spirits, and it was a blessing they shared so many beautiful moments together at that time of their lives.
Usually the smartest person in any room, Betty was a lifelong avid reader, a theatre aficionado and longtime supporter of the Alliance in Atlanta. Betty also loved Elvis, kd lang, and Leonard Cohen and she was one of the greatest lovers of cats ever.
Betty is survived by her sons Ward Simonton (Gina) of Athens, GA and Robert Simonton of Los Angeles, grandchildren Jesse Simonton (Alex Monaco) of Gainesville, FL and Carson Simonton (Chance Beaver) of Atlanta, GA and great granddaughters Charlie Beaver and Florence Monaco.
The family is grateful and has a deep appreciation for the staff of Visiting Angels, Arbor Terrace, Agape Hospice, and The Grove in Athens, GA for their care and support of Betty. In lieu of flowers a memorial gift to a dementia support organization or an animal shelter of your choice would be recommended.
A memorial will take place in the Atlanta area at a later date.
Bernstein Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
