Mrs. Bobbie Janette Thompson Carter passed away Thursday, July 31, 2014. The only child of Edith Brister and Sitmon Thompson, she was born in Bastrop, LA and raised in Georgetown, SC. She graduated from Winyah High School and Limeston Girls School in Gaffney, SC with a degree in childhood education and music. While in college she was a member and soloist with the school choir, and also sang in three church choirs.
She was chosen Miss Georgetown, and represented the city throughout the state in many special events. Prior to her marriage, Mrs. Carter was selected for a leading role in the first musical production at Dock Street Theater of Charleston, SC. In an article appearing in the Charleston News and Courier, it was noted that the leading lady covered over 4,500 miles traveling from her home in Georgetown Garden Club and chaired the annual Georgetown Camellia Show. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, and a fourth grade teacher at W.C. Bynum Elementary School.
Married to James Henry Carter Jr. in 1951, the couple later moved to Athens with their four children. She was preceded in death by her husband, as well as a son, James Henry Carter III “Rusty”. Surviving are her daughter, Jan Carter; and two sons, Clay Carter (Ellen) and Reeves Carter (Jeannie), all of Athens. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren, Carter and Kelly Lenderman; Casey and Carrie Carter; William, Anderson, Mary Baker and Sarah Ellen Carter; and Griffin and Byrd Carter; and four great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Carter actively participated in programs at Beech Haven Baptist Church and the First Baptist Church of Athens. She taught kindergarten at Beech Haven Baptist, and worked at Cofer’s Home and Garden Center, Athens Academy and Appointments at Five. She served on the board of directors of the YWCO, was a member of the Joe Callaway Sunday School Class and the Tuesday Morning Bridge Club.
A memorial service will be held 3PM Sunday, August 3rd at First Baptist Church of Athens.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a tree be planted in memory of Mrs. Carter, or donations made to the Rusty Carter Scholarship Fund at the Athens YMCA for use at Athens Y Camp in Tallulah Falls or other charity of one’s choice.
