Born in Burbank, California, and raised in Scarsdale, New York, Carole attended Maria Regina High School in Hartsdale, New York. She got her Bachelor's degree from Mount Saint Mary's University in Los Angeles in 1971, launching her childhood dream to be a nurse. She then earned a Master’s degree in nursing from the University of California Los Angeles in 1974 and in 1995, another Master’s degree to become a Family Nurse Practitioner from Georgia State University. She spent the majority of her career at Agnes Scott College, where she served as the Director of the Student Health Center. Later, in "retirement," she worked with L'Arche Atlanta and with Emory University in Palliative Care. She was a gifted nurse and teacher, leaving a legacy of kindness, compassion, and unwavering steadiness.
In her personal life, Carole was an avid gardener and a woman of many interests including yoga, tap-dancing, and cycling, among numerous other hobbies she pursued over the years. She was tenacious and strong, riding 60 miles on her bicycle for her 60th birthday. Carole traveled extensively, beginning in her childhood when her father worked for TWA Airlines. She and her sister, Maureen, flew around the world together as her college graduation gift, returning to Hyderabad, India for the wedding of one of Carole’s many friends from her summer there as an exchange student. She often spoke fondly of the memories and relationships she made in India. Carole married George (Jack) Holcomb in 1973, and together they moved from Los Angeles to Northern California before moving across the country to Georgia. During their time in Northern California, they enjoyed water skiing, snow skiing on Mount Shasta, trips along the Pacific Coast Highway, and traveling throughout the Pacific Northwest. Carole joked that she and Jack raised a child in every decade and across the country—the 1970s and 1980s in California, and the 1990s to 2000s in Georgia. In the years before her health began to decline, she spent considerable time in Brazil and Guatemala with her son and his family. She was beloved by her children and grandchildren, and by all who considered her a second mom—of whom there were many.
She is preceded in death by her father, Paul Strohm, and her mother, Mildred Strohm. She is survived by her husband, Jack Holcomb; her children Byron Holcomb (Laura), Kara Holcomb Parker, and Aimee Holcomb Boyer; her beloved grandchildren: Noah Boyer, Lauden Holcomb, and Henry Parker; her brother, Greg Strohm (Joan) and their children Jane and Colin, and Colin's child Evey; her sister, Maureen Schumacher (Chad), and their son, Devin; her niece Carrie Hodge; and her Goddaughter, Marcelle Carlson. Her family will miss her dearly, but they carry forward the warmth, strength, and love she gave so freely.
A memorial service and reception in her honor will be held at the Cecil B. Day Chapel of the State Botanical Gardens in Athens, Georgia on Sunday, December 14, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. Anyone who would like to honor her memory is invited to attend.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to L'Arche Atlanta, at https://www.larcheatlanta.org/donate-now.html, a community she loved dearly.
Bernstein Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
