Mr. Marlowe taught history at Benton Elementary School in Nicholson, GA to 6th, 7th, and 8th graders.  In 6th grade, he began with ancient histories progressing to Greece and Rome.  In 7th grade was the history of Europe and Latin America.  And, in 8th grade, American history.  

For three days each week, there was a lecture with his handwritten notes on an overhead projector.  Students were to copy the notes verbatim.  On Thursdays, there was a recap of what was taught and on Friday, a 10-question test.

Every couple of weeks, Mr. Marlowe would throw in a movie from his private stock that expounded upon the current studies.  I distinctly remember seeing "The Robe" across two class periods.  Other films fit nicely into our one-hour classes.

How ever he arrived at this method of teaching, it was extremely effective.  Years later, both good students and bad students of his have remarked about how much of what he taught they retained.

While on our honeymoon in 1991, my wife and I left our resort in Cancun and made a trip to the ruins of Tulum in an open-top Jeep.  It was hot and the jungle surrounding the highway looked unforgiving.  The risk of making that trip was far outweighed by the opportunity to see something Mr. Marlowe taught about in the 7th grade.  Standing at the base of the ancient Mayan pyramid, I could relate in outstanding detail how the civilization lived their daily lives long before the Spanish arrived in the 1500's.

Great teachers have the ability to instill a love of learning.  For a great many kids who passed through Benton, there is no equal to Mr. Marlowe in that respect.  I thank him for all he has allowed me to more deeply enjoy in my life.

During my four years in Athens I spent a lot of time with Charles as he visited the Antique Store where I worked. I loved to hear his stories and see what he loved to collect. While I have lost touch with him over the years I will always remember his kindness and gentle demeanor.

We were sad to hear about our neighbor Mr. Marlowe.  Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Charles.

Charles was a good friend of mine. He came by our home many times and we would go out to eat and ride around with him telling me the history of many places. I tried my best to get him to write a book. I wish I had taped it all.
I believe he had more knowledge of downtown Athens than anyone I've ever known. He loved the history of Athens and seems like he could tell you the history of every store and the people that worked there. 
I believe most of all he loved Athens High school history.

Mr. Marlowe was  a dedicated teacher who made an impact on my life, and I’m sure inspired many others. All these years later I still remember so much about his classes. And yes, his Mustang was amazing!

So sorry to hear the passing of Mr. Marlowe. He was one of my favorite teachers at Benton Elementary days. He will be missed. Till we meet again RIP.

I’m so sorry to hear about Mr. Marlowe’s passing. He was one of my favorite teachers. He made history so interesting and made me want to dig deeper into the events we studied. Prayers for his family and friends.

Mr. Marlowe was such a great teacher. He taught social studies at Benton Elementary School in Nicholson, GA. He knew so much about history and made it so interesting for the students.  He will be missed but not forgotten.
