

At the age of 86, Don wrapped up a journey of faith, family and hard work. Born March 7, 1940, he was a native Athenian and son of the late Joe Washington (J.W.) and Bonnie Bowden Hix.
Don graduated from Athens High School in 1958 where he played trumpet in the marching band. Upon graduation, he attended Young Harris College and the University of Georgia. Don graduated from the Georgia School of Banking entering into a lengthy banking career in the Athens and Winder areas.
He was an active member of Winder First United Methodist Church where he attended the W.Y. Smith Sunday School class and spent many Friday mornings cooking breakfast for the Men’s Club. Don spent 46 years as a dedicated member of the International Lions Club. He served as president of clubs in Athens and Winder achieving multiple awards for his committed service.
In addition to his parents, Don is preceded in death by his loving wife of 64 years, Evelyn Daniel Hix.
Survivors include his daughters, Lynn Hix McCaughey (Bill) of Milton and Denise Bailey (Danny) of Danielsville; granddaughter, Courtney Barker (Brad); grandsons, Tanner Bailey (Candice) and William Bailey (Drew); great-granddaughters, Clara Bailey, Emma Bailey and Grace Barker.
He is also survived by his twin brother, Dennis Joe Hix (Jackie) of Hartwell; and niece, Angie Hix, as well as many cousins and close friends.
The family would like to extend our heartfelt appreciation to the administration and staff of Presbyterian Village, Athens and Inspire Hospice for their loving care and support.
Visitation will be held at Bernstein Funeral Home on Friday, July 10, from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m., with a graveside service immediately following at Evergreen Memorial Park. Rev. Dr. Geoff Murphy will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Winder First United Methodist Church or the Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foundation.
