She was born February 26, 1923 in Bethel, North Carolina, to parents Robert and Pearl Whitley. She graduated from Bethel High School, Emmanuel College, Franklin Springs, Georgia, and attended East Carolina College (now East Carolina University) in Greenville, North Carolina.
On December 28, 1943, she married Lawrence Edward English in Bethel, North Carolina, and moved to Ashtabula, Ohio. In November of 1999, she retired to Athens, Georgia.
Dorothy was a devoted pastor’s wife for 58 years. She served as Women’s Ministry Director, Sunday school teacher and election poll volunteer. She was an excellent cook and hosted many missionaries, evangelists, and pastors in her home over the years. She was a stay-at-home mom who enjoyed table hockey, Tri-Ominos, board games, reading and word search puzzles, sewing, crocheting Barbie doll clothes, toys, doilies, and baby sweater outfits.
She will be remembered for the lovely intricate crocheted snowflakes she gave to her children and grandchildren. She made delicious butter mints, fudge, popcorn balls, and lemon cake. Dorothy had a good sense of humor and enjoyed playing practical jokes.
Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Donna (Steve) Molnar of North Ridgeville, Ohio; sons, Loy (Alba) English of Overland Park, Kansas, Robert (Margaret) English of Taylor, Michigan, and Kim English of Athens, Georgia; grandchildren, Amy (Frank) King, Lori (Matt) Dortch, Heidi (Jeremiah) Yerton, and Elizabeth (Chris) Tidwell; great-grandchildren, Tyler Robinson, Abby and Bella Dortch, Sammy and Jonny King, Ellie Yerton, and Brooklyn, London, and Scarlett Tidwell; and several nieces and nephews.
