Edna Ward Ellis, 96, of Athens, was called home to be with her Lord on Thursday, October 5, 2017. Edna was a native of Boone, NC and was a daughter of the late Lionel A. Ward and Birdie Mast Ward. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Ellis was preceded in death by her husband, Capt. William S. Ellis Sr. USN, (Ret).
Edna was a full time homemaker. She and her husband Bill were longtime members of Young Harris Memorial United Methodist Church where she served in different capacities of the United Methodist Women’s organization and as a Circle Leader and member of the Coworkers Sunday School Class. She was also a member of the Beechwood Hills Garden Club, the Athens Regional Hospital Auxiliary and the Athens Art Association.
Edna is survived by her two sons, William S. Ellis Jr. (wife Susan) and James E. Ellis (Chris), in addition to three grandchildren, Mandi L. Mitchell of St. Simons Island, GA, Jennifer S. Young of St. Simons Island, GA and James E. Ellis Jr. of Hilton Head Island, SC and four great grandchildren.
Special thanks go out to the staff of Morningside Assisted Living for making the last five years of Edna’s life comfortable and pleasant.
The family will receive friends Sunday, October 8 from 5-7 p.m. at Bernstein Funeral Home.
A graveside service will be held Monday, October 9 at 11 a.m. at Evergreen Memorial Park.
