Elizabeth (Betty Anne) Fogg Hayward, age 78, passed away in her home on Thursday, September 5, 2013 after a long and valiant struggle with a rare degenerative neurological disease. She had recently returned from an extended visit to her beach home in North Carolina where she enjoyed the ocean and time with family.
Elizabeth was the daughter of the late Lockwood Ware Fogg and Ellen Pearson Fogg. She was born in Washington, DC on April 25, 1935. She attended Bucknell University in Lewisburg, PA, graduating in 1956 with a degree in English, and later attended Occupational Therapy school in Philadelphia, PA.
She was married to the late William (Bill) L. Hayward on August 9, 1958. Together they shared a life full of happiness and joy, spending their time and energies with family and friends in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Topsail Beach and Athens. Betty Anne was a loving mother and a strong role model, showing remarkable independence and dignity throughout her life. She was an accomplished snow skier, tennis player, sailor, gardener and bridge player. Betty Anne was active in her community, serving as a long standing member of the PEO for Women, a member of the Athens First United Methodist Church, and an active alumnus of the Pi Beta Phi Sorority.
She is survived by two sisters and a brother - Barbara Grove, Martha Fogg and Lockwood Fogg; three daughters and sons-in-law - Janet and Martin Friday of Danville, PA, Carolyn Hayward-Williams and Terry Williams of Oakton, VA, and Susan and Chris Touchette of Basalt, CO; and six grandchildren – Sarah and Dylan Friday, Elizabeth and Olivia Williams, and Ellie and William Touchette.
A Memorial Service will be held Sunday, September 8, at 2 pm at The Athens First United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends at the church immediately following the service. A private burial will be held at a later time. Bernstein Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to the Emory University School of Medicine’s Neurology Department, which is conducting research on degenerative neurological diseases. Donations may be sent to:
