Eric was born in Norman, Oklahoma on July 11, 1982, but moved to Athens, Georgia in June of 1986. He attended Timothy Road Elementary, Clarke Middle School, and then graduated from Clarke Central High School in 2000. Following High School, Eric played college baseball for Southern Polytechnic State University, Middle Georgia State University, and University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma.
He was a beloved brother, son, soon-to-be uncle, and friend. Eric served as the president of the Athens Dart League, where he started an annual food drive to give back to the Athens community. Eric was a very gifted artist and loved drawing cartoons. Some of his favorites to draw were the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Garfield, Bugs Bunny, and Snoopy/Woodstock from the Peanuts. In addition to his love for drawing, he was a huge fan of Georgia football and Braves baseball. It was rare to find pictures of him where he was not at a game or repping the G or the A for his favorite teams!
Eric started playing baseball from the time he could swing a bat! He was an active member of the Athens Little League throughout his youth, then played JV and Varsity baseball at Clarke Central High School. He also got invited to play for the Jefferson American Legion League the summer before college. After college, Eric served as a member of the Athens Little League Umpire Association for many years. He loved having the opportunity to mentor young kids, and encourage them to have fun, while also developing their baseball/softball skills.
Eric was preceded in death by his mother, Ann Frere West. He is survived by his father, Randy West, sisters, Kimberly West (38), Kelli West O’Donnell (36) (Corbin O’Donnell), and brother, Bradley West (34).
A private burial will take place at Evergreen Memorial Park, followed by a visitation at the family’s private residence on Saturday August 22, from 2:00-6:00 p.m. ET.
Bernstein Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
