

Eugene VanLandingham Herrin of Athens, Georgia passed away peacefully on October 7, 2026. The son of Harrold and Emily Herrin of Winder, Georgia, he was born in Atlanta, Georgia, May 25, 1940, and spent his formative years in Winder, Georgia. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Lee McGee Herrin.
Dr. Herrin received his BS degree from the University of Georgia in 1962 and went on to earn his Doctor of Medicine from the Medical College of Georgia, Augusta, Georgia in 1966. After graduating from medical school, Dr. Herrin completed his Internship and OBGYN Residency at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, Texas in 1970. Following his residency, he joined the Army and was stationed in Germany until 1973. At the end of his military service, he settled in Athens, Georgia in 1973. He joined the private practice of Traylor, Crosby and Hardman OBGYN which went on to become Athens OBGYN. He practiced until his retirement in 2011.
Dr. Herrin served as president of the Crawford W. Long Medical Society and Chief of Staff of St. Mary’s Hospital. He was involved with the Medical Association of Georgia and Alliant-Georgia Medical Care Foundation. Dr. Herrin demonstrated a lifelong love for Athens Y Camp and the Athens YMCA, where he served as chairman of the board.
He was preceded in death by his half-brother, Harrold Milford Herrin, Jr., Hiawassee, Georgia and is survived by his three children, Andrew Herrin and wife Clara, Amanda McPherson and husband Kevin, and Amy Wilhite and husband Steve; seven grandchildren Suzanne McCabe and husband Parker of New York, New York, Frances Delk and husband William of Augusta, Georgia, Will Herrin of Athens, Georgia, Charles McPherson of Columbus, Georgia, Meg McPherson of Columbus, Georgia, Mary Wilhite of Memphis, Tennessee and Walker Wilhite of Memphis, Tennessee.
The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to his caregivers Terrica Brightwell, Brenda Haynes, Cynthia Reid and Kylie Shields for their loving care and help.
A funeral service will be held on Sunday, October 11, 2026, at 3 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, Athens, Georgia, followed by burial at Oconee Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Saturday, October 10, 2026, at Bernstein Funeral Home.
