He was preceded in death by his parents May Wilson Slayton and Roy Dillard Slayton, and brother, Roy D. Slayton, Jr. He is survived by one sister, Jackie Slayton (John) Methe, of Athens, GA.
Gene was known by many, and loved by all, for his generous spirit and lively sense of humor.
His work as a regional sales manager for Wickes Corporation took him to Missouri and Maryland, but upon retirement he returned to his hometown to enjoy life with his family and friends. He was a disabled veteran who served in the USAF during the Korean War. He was an active member, and past board member, of Athens VFW Post 2872. Gene was a true animal lover who, when told, he could no longer bring his beloved companion Dexter in to the VFW, founded and maintained “Dexter’s Run,” a dog park open to the public on the VFW grounds. The park is his gift and legacy to the community, and will remain open for all to enjoy.
He is survived by former wife and longtime companion, Annette Edwards Slayton, and their three children, Gary L. (Susan) Slayton of Winterville, GA., David L. (Lynn) Slayton of Statham, GA., and Donna S. (Hudson) Wade, of Fernandina Beach, FL.
