Evelyn Smith Martin, 76, of Athens, passed away on Wednesday, September 23, 2026. Born on September 4, 1950, in Charlotte, NC, Evelyn moved to Athens at an early age and remained deeply rooted in the community.
Evelyn graduated from Athens High School. She married in 1972, and in the years that followed, she and her family lived in Dallas and Chicago before returning to Athens, where they settled and built a lasting life together.
Evelyn was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother whose steady presence and care shaped the lives of those around her. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Douglas E. Martin; her son, Jared Martin; her brother, George W. Smith, Jr. (Nancy), all of Athens; and her grandchildren, Christopher Meurer, Edward Witchie, Ethan Martin, Laura Martin, and Breanna Martin. She was preceded in death by her parents, George W. Smith, Sr. and Olivia Hale Smith; her brother, Anthony L. Smith; and her son, Douglas Tyson “Ty” Martin.
A woman of quiet interests and enduring traditions, Evelyn found joy in reading, quilting, and painting. She especially loved Christmas, taking particular delight in collecting Santa Clauses—an affection that reflected her appreciation for warmth, memory, and the familiar comforts of the season.
Evelyn’s faith and community ties were important to her throughout her life. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Athens, the Daughters of the American Revolution, and a book club, where she shared fellowship, service, and the simple pleasure of good conversation and good books.
The family will receive friends Sunday, September 27, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., at Bernstein Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held Monday, September 28, at 2:00 p.m., at First Baptist Church of Athens. Interment will be in Stevens Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Lexington.
Evelyn will be remembered with respect and gratitude by all who knew and loved her, and her memory will remain a lasting presence in the family and community she cherished.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Athens, P.O. Box 8107, Athens, GA 30603.
Bernstein Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
