

The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, at the Bernstein Funeral Home, Athens, Ga. Pastor Eddie Bouknight will be officiating. Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. During that time, a light meal will be served in the Bernstein reception hall. Funeral service will be held at Bernstein from 2:00 p.m. until 2:30 p.m., followed by a short service at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Austin Bennett, John Tucker, Mark Tucker, Jayden Tucker, Josh Tucker and Jonathan Tucker.
Evelyn was born in Athens, Ga. on August 12, 1926. Evelyn married Ralph Johnny Tucker on May 14, 1948, and was married for 50 years.
Evelyn worked as a master seamstress for several companies over 45 years. In her retirement years, she enjoyed working with children in various activities and later spent much of her time working with senior citizen activities, including all types of quilting and crafting ideas.
One of her favorite sayings was “have bag, will travel.” She enjoyed traveling with her children to many places in the United States and also a trip to Europe.
Evelyn is survived by her two children, Joan Tolbert (Calvin) of Hull, Ga. and Johnny Tucker (Susan) of Kathleen, Ga. In addition, she had nine grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren, along with several nieces and nephews.
Evelyn is preceded in death by her husband, Johnny; and her daughter, Sharon (Sissy) Cox-Gilley, and two brothers: Walter Nelms and Pete Nelms; one sister, Naomi Williams, and one grandson, Brandon Tolbert.
The family of Joan Tolbert and Johnny Tucker wish to thank The Oaks at Willow Lake (Assisted Living) and the Heart of Georgia Hospice for their support with her care.
