Gary Dwight Brook

Our loved one, Gary Dwight Brook, passed away on October 25, 2026, at the age of 75. He was the son of Ralph and Nell Brook. Gary grew up in the Sylvan Hills community of Atlanta, Georgia, where he and his sister, Diane, could walk to school and church. After his parents’ deaths, he was raised by his aunt, Annabell Cantrell, and supported by family members, including his maternal aunt Connie, his Brook grandparents, and his uncle Arthur Brook.

As a child, Gary enjoyed the Boy Scouts and playing baseball. He was proud of his perfect attendance in grades 6 through 12. In 1970, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and was fortunate to be stationed in Germany and Greece. He was always extremely proud to have served his country and spoke fondly of his fellow soldiers and his travels. After 35 years of dedicated service, he retired from the Veterans Administration benefits department in Atlanta.

Gary enjoyed owning his home in Lithia Springs for nearly 40 years, where he spent time gardening, being with friends, and visiting family. In 2025, he moved to Athens to be closer to his niece and her family. Gary was a good brother, uncle, and cousin.

Gary is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Diane and Ronnie Gatlin; his nephew and niece-in-law, Jeff and Jen Gatlin; his niece and nephew-in-law, Jennifer and Sean McAuley, and their children, Sena and Asa; and many special cousins.

The family would like to thank the staff and residents of TerraBella in Athens, as well as his caregiver, Crystal Roberts, for their kindness and friendship. The family would also like to express its gratitude to Hearthwood Memory Care and Blue Summit Hospice for their compassion during his final days.

A graveside service will be held at Greenwood Cemetery in Atlanta on a date to be announced at 11:00 a.m.
