Glenn Hugh Newton, 78, of Athens Georgia died on Thursday, March 28, 2013. He was born on December 11, 1934, in Dawson County Georgia to the late Carl Clifton Newton, Sr. and Mary Elizabeth Foster. Mr. Newton was raised in Gainesville, Georgia. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict, he then moved to Athens and received a Bachelor’s degree in Business Economics from the University of Georgia in 1959. Mr. Newton was a retired Athens businessman, partner in Newton Brothers Inc.
Mr. Newton was an active member of Young Harris Memorial United Methodist Church for over 50 years where he served on several boards and committees. He was a “Life” member of the Gideons International, member of the Athens Lions Club where he served as President, President of the Athens West Lions Club, a 32 Mason and served as President of the Athens Shrine Club #1. Mr. Newton was a long-time volunteer at The Potters House rehabilitation center in Jackson County. He also was a member of the board of directors at The Atlanta Union Mission for over 21 years in Atlanta, serving as President.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Karen Leigh Newton.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Juanita Moore Newton; two daughters, Patsy Newton Bryan (Thomas Bryan, Jr.) of St. Simons Island, Georgia, and Teresa Newton Carter Jackson, (Tom) of Panama City Beach, Florida; four grandchildren, Thomas Edward Bryan, III, Marguerite Elizabeth Bryan, Ashlee Glennis Carter, and Ana Jackson; a brother, Carl Clifton Newton, Jr. (Vivian); and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be at 2:00 p.m. on April 1, 2013, at Young Harris Memorial United Methodist Church. Rev. Carey Gibson and Dr. Dan Crawford will be officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park in Athens. The family will receive visitors from 6:00 to 9:00 pm on Saturday, March 30, 2013 at Bernstein Funeral Home, 3195 Atlanta Highway, Athens.
Pallbearers will be David Newton, Mark Newton, John Freeland, David Wortham, Thomas Bryan, III, and David Phillips.
