Athens
Gordon Kenneth Gregory, 86, of Athens, GA passed away Sunday, September 8, 2013, with his family at his side.
A native of Kenosha, WI, Mr. Gregory was the son of the late Hardy Gregory and Helen Haas Gregory. He was a retired research chemist with SC Johnson Wax and a member of St. Gregory the Great Episcopal Church. Mr. Gregory was a devoted husband, and a loving father and grandfather.
Science, music, sports, and family were very important in Gordon’s life. In addition to being a published chemist in the Encyclopedia of Polymer Science and Technology, he enjoyed ice skating, skiing, biking, hiking, and was an avid tennis player and golfer. He was a classical music aficionado and was a gifted singer. He began singing as a young boy in the boys’ choir at his church in Kenosha and continued to sing all through his adult life. Music was of great interest to him, and his knowledge of classical composers, operas, symphonies, and chamber music was immense. He was also an astronomy buff and even built his own telescope, taking years to carefully hand-polish the 12-inch mirror from plain glass. He was a valued resource in the fields of science and music, and he was a “professor” to many people. He will be greatly missed.
Gordon was preceded in death by his brother, Donald Gregory of MI, and his sister, Dorothy Kishline of WI.
Gordon is survived by his wife, Lucy (Bedrosian) Gregory of Athens; son, Dr. Robert Gregory of DeWitt, IA; daughter, Cynthia Hoover and husband, Ray of Athens, GA; granddaughters, Rachel, Julia, and Abigail Hoover; brothers, Richard Gregory of St. Petersburg, FL and Stanley Gregory of Bellingham, WA; and sister, Susan Popchock of Spokane, WA.
A memorial service will be held at St. Gregory the Great Episcopal Church on Saturday, September 14, 2013 at 1:00 PM. The church is located at 3195 Barnett Shoals Road.
