Harry Jarvis Haynsworth

Harry Jarvis Haynsworth passed away peacefully on September 17, 2026, at age 101. He was born in Haynsworth, Florida, in Alachua County, on July 22, 1925, to Josiah Edgar Haynsworth, Sr., and Jettie Futch Haynsworth.

He graduated from Alachua High School, where he served as class president, before enlisting in the U.S. Army during WWII and achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant. At the end of the war, he attended the University of Florida where he earned a bachelor’s degree in agriculture education. He taught agriculture at Dixie County High School in Cross City, Florida, for a year, and it was there that he met his future wife of 65 years, Carol Fredenburg. In 1952, he began a career with the USDA Soil Conservation Service as a Plant Material Specialist while in Florida and relocated to Athens, GA, in 1963, retiring in 1984.

He was an active member of First Baptist Church located in Athens, Georgia. After retirement, he volunteered at the UGA Botanical Gardens and Northeast Georgia Food Bank. He loved working in the yard, growing plants in his greenhouse, and tending to his garden. He also enjoyed genealogy, traveling across the country and into Canada with a travel group, and spending time with family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents; sisters, Clara and Martha; and brothers, Richard, Sie, Edward and Earl.

Survivors include his daughter, Mary Beth Bell (Sidney) of Watkinsville, GA; his granddaughters, Kathrine Patel (Kris) of Commerce, GA, and Kristin Bell of Athens, GA; and his nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend special thanks to Kimberly Witcher, his caretaker, and Affinity Hospice.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
