A native of Macon, Georgia, she was the daughter of Howell Hillary Henderson and Mary Magdeline (“Maggie”) Mullis Henderson. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Mercer University and taught primary school before marrying and becoming a homemaker. She later worked as a caseworker for the Department of Family and Children Services in Athens.
Helen volunteered as an usher for the UGA Performing Arts Center and the Classic Center and as part of the Friends of the ACC Library. She sang in the choirs of the First United Methodist Church of Athens and the Athens Choral Society.
In her retirement, Helen discovered the joys of solo travel and study abroad programs. Her favorite destinations included England, Malta, and Egypt. A passionate animal lover, she contributed her time and energy to the Athens Area Humane Society by fostering, adopting, and locating homes for many animal companions. She was an avid reader and literacy advocate as well as an enthusiastic patron of the performing and visual arts.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to her hospice team and caregivers, whose kindness and attentiveness brought comfort during her final weeks.
A private memorial gathering will be held at a later date at Athens First United Methodist Church, where her ashes will be interred at Hope Garden memorial site.
