Henry Holcomb Hall, 77, passed away peacefully at his residence in Bogart, Georgia on December 8, 2023. His wife of almost 50 years, Edith Elizabeth Rutledge Hall, fondly known as Bettye, 81, died on December 18, 2023, after a years-long, valiant battle with COPD, joining her husband, Henry, after he passed away on December 8—a true testament of their love even after death briefly parted them.
A memorial service celebrating their lives and resurrection will be held for both Bettye and Henry on Friday, January 5, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at Mulberry Street United Methodist Church in Macon with interment to follow on Saturday, January 6, 2024, at 12:00 noon at Newton City Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the church's Parlor from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. before the memorial service.
Born September 15, 1946, in Albany, Georgia, Henry was the son of the late Robert Price Hall, Sr. and Sara Cochran Hall. He was also preceded in death by his brothers Robert Price Hall, Jr. and George Henderson Hall, Sr.
A native of Baker County, Henry never met a stranger and kindled relationships throughout Georgia and beyond, often based on sharing a meal or drink along with stories that twisted and turned with colorful details. He had a deep and abiding interest in local, state, and national politics, having served as chairman of the Baker County Republican Party long before Georgia became a red state.
After serving his country in Vietnam with the United States Army, Henry operated Hall Farms and Hall Oil Co. before relocating to the Atlanta area where he continued to work in agribusiness until he retired in Bogart and developed a special affinity for flea markets, thrift shops, and yard sales, always aiming to flip his purchases at a profit or, more often, share them with someone in need.
Thoughtful and kindhearted, Henry was known to deliver fresh fruit and vegetables to friends and neighbors, unsolicited, to share his bounty. Even while home on hospice, he tended a small backyard garden with tomatoes and eggplant to share, a "farmer" until the day he died. As someone told his wife years ago, "You can take the man out of Baker County, but you can't take the Baker County out of the man."
Survivors include his wife of forty-nine years, Bettye Rutledge Hall of Bogart, daughters Erika Hall of Apollo Beach, Florida, Julia Hall Magda (Martin) of Macon, and Laura Hall Reidinger of Bogart, grandchildren Ella Magda, Will Magda, and Reynolds Reidinger, sisters Sara Jane Hall Dozier (David) of Bryson City, North Carolina and Louise Hall Pearson (Jimmy) of Montgomery, Alabama, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends scattered throughout the South.
The family extends its gratitude especially to caregivers Tina Waller, RN with Gentiva Hospice and Andrew Costa with Right at Home.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Henry's memory to Gentiva Hospice or to the local charity of the donor's choice.
Bernstein Funeral Home in Athens and Parker-Bramlett Funeral Home in Camilla are in charge of the arrangements.
