

The son of the late John and Cornelia Drooger Wiarda, Mr. Wiarda was born in Grosse Pointe, MI. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan and his PhD from the University of Florida. Mr. Wiarda was the author and co-author of over 100 books, many of which were translated into many languages. He taught at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and the University of Georgia since 2003 as Dean Rusk Professor of International Relations and Department Head. Mr. Wiarda was a consultant for many organizations, including the United Nations, White House, Congress, Defense Department, and many Washington think tanks.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Dr. Ieda Siqueira Wiarda; daughter, Kristy Lynn Williams and husband, Lt. Col. James Williams; sons, Dr. Howard Elvindo Wiarda and wife, Dr. Ann B. Wiarda and Jonathan Siqueira Wiarda and wife, Dr. Karen P. Wiarda, and five grandchildren, Kirk Williams, Gabrielle Wiarda, Grant Wiarda, Megan Wiarda, and Jack Wiarda.
He was dearly loved and will be forever missed.
Funeral services will be held 1PM Friday, September 18th at First Presbyterian Church of Athens. Interment will follow at Athens Memory Garden.
