He was born in Maryville, Tennessee on September 3, 1922 in the manager's residence at the Houston Hotel, an inn operated by his parents, Melvin Decatur Baker and Myrtle Rule Baker. He was the eighth born of ten children, and was preceded in death by his parents, nine siblings, and two wives, Imogene Young Baker, and Anna Maria Baker.
He is survived by three stepchildren, Freddie L. Matthews (Nancy) of Watkinsville, Gay Matthews Neighbors (Andrew) of Athens and Thomas Rex Matthews (Malinda) of Hull, several nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Mr. Baker served in the U. S. Army European Theatre and was discharged in March 1946. He returned to Maryville to continue his career in the retail appliance business, and joined Athens Tire and Supply, the Firestone Store, in January 1958. He loved the retail appliance business in Athens, and enjoyed and appreciated serving his loyal customers and friends for over 30 years. After he retired in 1991, he and his wife Ann made numerous trips to Europe to visit those places he had seen as a soldier.
The family would like to express sincere thanks and appreciation to the entire Compassionate Care Hospice Team who provided thoughtful treatment, care, and comfort to our Papa during his final days.
