A native of Bogalusa, Louisiana, Dr. Bateman was the son of the late James F. Bateman Sr and the late Emma Bulloch Bateman. He graduated from Tulane University, received his Master’s at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and his Doctorate at Tulane University. An economist, Dr. Bateman spent his early professional life at Indiana University in Bloomington before moving to the University of Georgia in 1991 from which he recently retired. He also taught as a visiting faculty member for short periods at the London School of Economics, Purdue University, University of Lujubljana (in the former Yugoslavia), DePauw University and the University of the South. He had also been a research associate at Harvard.
Dr. Bateman is survived by three cousins, Nan Bradley of Florida, and Jessie B. Benton and Paulette B. Crain of Louisiana.
A memorial service will be held 4PM Friday, February 3rd in the chapel at Bernstein Funeral Home.
