A native of Coventry, RI, Mr. Champlin was a son of the late Henry Clymer Champlin and Ida Eldora Congdon Champlin. He served on the Governor's Council of Parks and Recreation under Jimmy Carter, was President of the GRPS and was a Professor Emeritus at the University of Georgia where he was the former head of the Parks and Recreation Department and founded the Recreation and Leisure Studies degree.
Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Helene Dickey Champlin of Watkinsville, GA; children, Deborah Slaton of Minneapolis, MN, Diana Hensley of Milledgeville, GA, Duane Champlin of Blue Ridge, GA, Donna Kio of Milledgeville, GA, Joel Ben Cooper of San Pedro, CA and Steven D. Cooper of Athens, GA; 12 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren.
A memorial service for family will be held Sunday, September 3 at 3:00 p.m. at Hard Labor Creek State Park in Rutledge, GA.
