James Henry Horton, of Athens, passed away February 10, 2017 at Athens Regional Medical Center. A native of Athens-Clarke County, Georgia, Mr. Horton was the son of William P. Horton and Anne Crowder Horton. He graduated from Athens High School in 1957 and the University of Georgia School of Pharmacy in 1961. From there he continued with the family business and took over operation of ADD Drug Store in Five Points. Under Jim's control, ADD Drug store became an Athens landmark best known for its friendly service and the amazing lunch counter. Mr. Horton retired from ADD Drug Store in May of 2012.
Mr. Horton accomplished much in his life. He was proud to be an Eagle Scout and often talked fondly of those experiences. He was a member of First Baptist Church and served as a deacon as well as on several committees. One of his best memories with the Church was when he chaperoned on the youth trip to Europe in 1984. He also helped with meals for the youth when they had choir practice on Sunday evenings. He was treasurer of the Five Points Business Association for several years, and he was chairman for one year for the concession stand at Clarke Central High School for the Band Booster Club. However, he was first and foremost a family man. His proudest moments were the birth of his daughter, Angela, who was born on his birthday, and the birth of his daughter, Cathy, followed by the birth of his grandchildren, Wyatt and Cayla. He loved watching his grandkids play and was proud to see Wyatt following his footsteps in Scouting.
He was predeceased by his daughter, Angela Marie Horton; his parents, William P. Horton, Sr. and Anne Crowder Horton. He is survived by his loving wife, Lorene Horton; daughter, Cathy Horton Smitherman and husband, Stephen Smitherman; grandkids, Wyatt Holden Smitherman and Cayla Angela Smitherman; brother William "Bill" Horton and wife, Vicki Horton; nephew, Billy Horton; niece, Jenny Horton; several cousins; and other loved ones, Greg Dickson and wife, Kristin Dickson and their children, Mitchell Dickson and Cooper Dickson.
Visitation will be held at Bernstein Funeral Home on Monday, February 13 from 5-7 p.m. The funeral services will be held on Tuesday, February 14 at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church with Rev. Paul Baxley officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park.
