

A native of Statham, GA, Mr. Perkins was the son of the late G. Clifford Perkins and Stella Wall Perkins. After serving in the United States Navy, Mr. Perkins graduated from the University of Georgia and began his teaching career at Lavonia Elementary School in 1959. From 1960 to 1975, he served in various capacities at Madison County High School including teacher, boys’ and girls’ basketball coach, and assistant principal. In 1975, he became principal of Comer Elementary School where he served until 1977. Mr. Perkins was elected school Superintendent for Madison County Schools in 1978 and served until his retirement in 1998. During his teaching and administrative years, he was very dedicated to the Madison County School System, teachers, and students. Mr. Perkins was also an active member of Hull Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Grizzle Perkins of Hull; son, Scott Perkins of Atlanta; niece, Allyson Jones Summerour and husband, Gary of Winder, as well as a number of other nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held 2PM Saturday, May 19th in the chapel at Bernstein Funeral Home with Rev. Randy Crowe officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6-8PM Friday, May 18th at Bernstein.
Alton Thornton, Phil Thornton, Bob Thornton, Gary Summerour, Gary Grizzle, and Wade Grizzle will serve as pallbearers.
Past basketball players who played for Coach Perkins will serve as honorary pallbearers.
