

Jimmy was born May 26, 1947 in Atlanta, Georgia to James Everett Jones, Sr., and Inez Hale Jones. He grew up on Hapeville Road in Atlanta. He attended Cleveland Avenue Elementary School and graduated from Walter F. George High School in 1965. He graduated Young Harris College in 1967 and the University of Georgia in 1969.
He began his 44-year career with the Georgia Power Company in Forest Park, Georgia. After graduation, he returned to the Georgia Power Company in Athens, Georgia. He coordinated the needs of numerous storm crews throughout the years, assisted with the Relay for Life, the Athens Chapter Ambassadors, the Donald B. Crumley Fund, the Chamber of Commerce Membership Drive, and the Georgia Power Credit Union. He was truly “A Citizen Wherever We Serve.” Customers and electricians knew if they could contact Jimmy Jones, their needs would be taken care of regardless of the hour.
Jimmy was a member of Chapelwood United Methodist Church and the Whitehead Civitan Club where he served as Treasurer. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, making many trips with his friends. He also loved animals, especially 15-year-old Wendy, a miniature dachshund, who recently passed away; and Sam, a German Shorthair birddog.
Jimmy is survived by his wife of 55 years, Gay Hamilton Jones; his son, James Everett Jones, III; his daughter, Cynthia Jones Reilly (Jeff); his brother, Alec Allen Jones (Dawn); his granddaughter, Hannah Cecilia Jones; and his grandson, Jordan E. Reilly; his nephew, Brenton Jones (Angel); and his niece, Allie Jones Chappell (John); his cousins: Marie Knight Hudson and Ronnie Fowler.
Jimmy was preceded in death by his father, Everett Jones; his mother, Inez Jones; and his infant sister, Elizabeth.
A visitation for Jimmy will be on Thursday, May 23, at 1:00 p.m., at Bernstein Funeral Home, 3195 Atlanta Highway, Athens, followed by a funeral service in the chapel at 2:00 p.m.
Jimmy will be laid to rest in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Jimmy’s memory maybe made to Georgia Power, Donald B. Crumley Fund, Shriners Hospital, Tunnel To Towers, Young Harris College or a charity of your choice.
