Jane was born April 16, 1921, in Shawneetown, Illinois. She lived the majority of her younger years in Morganfield, Kentucky, later moving to Owensboro, Kentucky, where she graduated from Owensboro High School in 1939. On September 27, 1947, she married Dr. James O. (Jim) McKee. The couple lived in Owensboro, Kentucky; Hope, Indiana; and in 1968 moved to Marianna, Florida, where Jane lived until 2012 when she moved to Athens, Georgia, to be near family.
Jane was preceded in death by her parents, her seven siblings, and her husband Jim who passed away in 1983. She is survived by her five children: Amy Koeneman (Larry) of Indianapolis, Indiana; Sissy McRae (Terry) of Athens, Georgia; Jim McKee (Ann) of Colona, Illinois; Robert McKee (Debbie) of Winter Haven, Florida; and Bill McKee (Trease) of Key Largo, Florida. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews (including special nieces Helen Jane McElroy and Sandra Greenwell), and dear friends Becky and Hugh Hudson.
Jane loved people, especially her family and friends, always willing to help others and always putting others before herself. She was known for her love of bridge (Bronze Life Master and Certified Duplicate Bridge Club Director, serving as Director of the Marianna Duplicate Bridge Club for more than 40 years), her love of cooking and baking (especially rum cakes, rib roasts, chocolate chip cookies, and Yorkshire pudding), her love of shopping (never passing up a good bargain, regardless of whether she needed the item or not), and, in her later years, her love of bird watching (especially “her” bright red Cardinals).
Those who knew her will always remember her sweet disposition, her inquisitive mind, and her cheerful, positive attitude. Perhaps what people will most remember about Jane is that she was a world-class conversationalist who never met a stranger.
You are urged to remember Jane by helping others, being cheerful and positive even when you had rather not, performing random acts of kindness, and singing “My Old Kentucky Home” for no reason at all.
A private family memorial service will be held at a later date.
Bernstein Funeral Home, Athens, Georgia, is in charge of arrangements.
