Jean was born and raised in Atlanta and lived most of her life in Lithonia, before moving to the Athens area in 2006. She served as a receptionist with Dr. Hutchinson for many years, before she retired and was an active member of Mars Hill Baptist Church. Jean enjoyed reading and home décor and especially enjoyed decorating her home for the Christmas season and spending time with her family and friends.
Mrs. Gatlin was preceded in death by her parents, Charles A. and Damia Elizabeth Allison McDaniel; her husband, Hugh R. Gatlin; son-in-law, Bob Hogan; and her brother-in-law, Ray Arnold.
She is survived by her children, Donna Hogan of Eatonton; Hugh Gatlin, Jr and his wife, Allyson of Savannah; and David Gatlin and his wife, Liz of Watkinsville; brother, Charles (Buddy) McDaniel and his wife, Carolyn of Auburn, AL; sister-in-law, Betty Bernard of San Antonio, TX; 9 grandchildren, Caroline Zavislak and her husband, Peter, Valerie Gatlin, Lisa Gatlin, Brandon Cowherd, Elise Cowherd, Katrina Waldrop, Ansley Brown, Caroline Brown, and Caleb Brown; two great-grandchildren, Riley Reider and Evie Zavislak; several nieces and nephews.
A gathering of family and friends will be held 12:00 to 2:00 PM Friday, December 20, 2019 in Bernstein Funeral Home, followed by the funeral service at 2:00 PM in the chapel of the funeral home with Pastor Joe Hughes officiating.
Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Tim Mizell, Jeff Mizell, Sonny McDaniel, Jeff McDaniel, Scott McDaniel, Jimmy Mizell and Brandon Cowherd.
Honorary pallbearers will be David Murphy, Ricky Haynes, Calvin Felix, Garrett Ifland and Michael DeMedeiros.
