Jeannette (Jean) Hambrick Bishop passed away on Saturday, February 6, 2016 at the age of 93. Mrs. Bishop was born August 21, 1922, in Americus, GA. She was the daughter of Andrew Jackson Hambrick and Susan Irene Westmoreland Hambrick of Spartanburg, SC.
After graduating from high school, she moved to Athens with her family. She attended the University of Georgia until she married the love of her life, Emmett R. Bishop in 1942.
Her deep faith in God was the most important part of her life. Although she never had any formal training in counseling, she spent countless hours praying with and counseling others. She was considered by those who knew her as a dedicated prayer warrior they could depend on.
She was a very loving and devoted mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She leaves behind a heritage that taught all of her family the importance of faith in Jesus Christ. Her life reflected that deep faith all the days of her long life.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Emmett Bishop and by two brothers, Reid Hambrick and Bill Hambrick. She is survived by a brother, Jack Hambrick of Spartanburg, SC; a son, Dr. Emmett R. Bishop, Jr. (Jill) of Westminster, Colorado; a daughter, Susan Bishop Middlebrooks (Steve) of Athens, GA; four grandsons, Wesley Middlebrooks (Courtney), Chad Middlebrooks (Jessica), Tripp Bishop (Gillie) and Adam Bishop (Mariel); and eleven great- grandchildren.
The family wishes to express their deep gratitude to Judy Maynor for her love and sacrifice as a caregiver and friend to our mother. She was always referred to by our mother as “her adopted daughter.”
We would also like to express our appreciation to the staff at Talmage Terrace, the Remain at Home Caregivers and to Gentiva Hospice for their kindness, love and support.
Services will be held Tuesday, February 9 at 2 p.m. at Young Harris Memorial United Methodist Church, Prince Avenue, Athens, GA. The family will receive friends in the Young Harris fellowship hall Tuesday from 12:45 to 1:45 p.m. Burial will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park.
The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Young Harris United Methodist Church, 973 Prince Avenue, Athens, Georgia 30606.
