Jim devoted eight decades to scouting as an Eagle Scout and as Assistant Scoutmaster, White Water Program Director, and mentor. Paddling and hiking were his favorite pursuits, and he volunteered for and led many scout events. He also served on the 1996 Olympics white-water safety squad.
Jim received his PhD from the University of Michigan and retired from the UGA faculty after 30 years. He was a lifelong Bulldog fan.
He is survived by his sister, Joanne, children, Christine, Amy, and Michael, their spouses Scott, Jake, and Akiko, and grandsons Nathaniel and Joseph.
The funeral will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, April 8, at The Catholic Center at the University of Georgia with a reception following.
In place of flowers, donations can be made to the Northeast Georgia Scout Council.
