

Born in Newport News, Virginia, he was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle who devoted his life to Jesus and his family. John spent his early adulthood sailing the seas serving the U.S. Navy, before and during the Vietnam War. Once honorably discharged from the Navy, he began selling insurance before starting his own painting business, HIS Colors Painting. Beyond his professional accomplishments, he was most known for spreading his deep faith with his charismatic enthusiasm and quick wit. He also loved to fish and watch football whenever time permitted.
John is survived by his daughters: Christina Schwind and DeMaris Hardigree; grandchildren: Robin Hardigree, Jonathan Boersma, Cooper Schwind, and Jemma Schwind; great-grandchildren: Taylor Cunningham and Kelsey Hardigree; niece, Madeline “Renee” Dean Chafin; and predeceased by his wife of 40+ years, Janet Chafin; mother, Mary Madeline Slavin Chafin; father, William Howell “Howard” Chafin Jr.; sister, Charlotte Chafin Blume; and brother, Allen Chafin.
A graveside service will be held Tuesday, July 14, at 1:00 p.m., in Evergreen Memorial Park, 3655 Atlanta Highway, Athens.
