Joyce was born March 23, 1929 to John and Martha Domke. She grew up on a farm in southern Wisconsin. She loved the horses and lambs, but not the cows and chickens. She studied at a small rural school, where the teacher found her books to augment the small library. She attended the University of Wisconsin on a Knapp scholarship and graduated with honors. There she met Francis Johnston, and they married in 1948.
They moved to Athens in 1960, when they joined the UGA environment. Joyce studied at the School of Education and earned Masters and PhD degrees in Reading Education. She worked at the Northeast Georgia Regional Educational Service Agency for many years, developing programs to train new teachers across the state. She was an avid gardener and loved to travel. Joyce and Francis were members of First Presbyterian Church of Athens.
Joyce was predeceased by her brother Carl and sister Helen. She is survived by her brother Arnold and his wife Barbara, husband Francis, son Michael and his wife Cheryl, and grandsons Ben and Dan.
There will be a private burial ceremony at Oconee Hill Cemetery.
The family requests that donations in Joyce's honor go to the State Botanical Garden of Georgia, one of her favorite places.
