Kay was preceded in death by her parents, William Harry Sherrod and Frances Evelyn Sherrod.
She is survived by her husband of nearly 53 years, Jack Curry, their daughter Kimberly Curry Hall (Chris Hall) of Washington, DC, and her sister, Billie Sherrod (Joe Savage) of Atlanta, Georgia.
Kay was born and raised in Columbus, Georgia and graduated from Jordan Vocational High School. She earned a Bachelor of Science in elementary education from Auburn University, where she was named “Loveliest on the Plains.” Kay also earned a Master of Education from the University of Georgia with an emphasis on early childhood education and reading and pursued additional graduate studies at Furman University and the University of California, Berkeley.
A lifelong educator, Kay taught elementary students in DeKalb County, Georgia; Trigg County, Kentucky; Anderson County, South Carolina; and Baltimore County, Maryland. During her teaching career, she received numerous awards, including Teacher of the Year.
Kay and her husband moved to Timonium, Maryland in 1975, where she and her family enjoyed boating on the Chesapeake Bay and were active members of the Baltimore Yacht Club. Kay and Jack returned to Athens, Georgia to retire in 2010. Kay was an avid fan of University of Georgia football and enjoyed the more temperate Georgia climate, which afforded her the opportunity to develop an interest in landscaping their home in Shoal Creek Farms.
Kay’s sparkling blue eyes and bright smile reflected an inner beauty that was exhibited in her creative abilities and care for others, especially her family. Her strength, dignity, and grace were admired by all who knew her.
A celebration of Kay’s life will be held on Saturday, March 16 from 1-3 p.m. at the State Botanical Garden of Georgia, 2450 South Milledge Ave., Athens, Georgia 30605.
