

A native of Athens, Mr. Hancock was the son of Peggy Bailey Hancock and the late James Gordon Hancock. He attended Athens High School and the University of Georgia before serving in the United States Navy for 4 years. As owner of Hancock Properties, Mr. Hancock was a successful businessman and a prominent builder/developer and served as past president of the Athens Homebuilders Association. Among many other projects, he was the builder of Beaver Dam Farms in Colbert and later worked as executive vice president for Kenny Rogers Productions. Mr. Hancock served the Athens community in many capacities. He was a devoted husband, loving father, and adored grandfather.
Survivors in addition to his mother include his wife of 45 years, Margie Hancock of Athens; sons, Jay Hancock and Scott Hancock; daughter, Mandy Thornton and husband, Craig; grandchildren, Derek Hancock, Mara Hancock, Camila Thornton and Miles Thornton; brother, Harry Hancock; sister, Beverly Wallischeck and husband, John, and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 5-8PM Friday, December 5th at Bernstein Funeral Home. A private graveside service will be held at Evergreen Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Athens Homeless Shelter, 620 Barber St, Athens, GA 30601 or to the Athens Food Bank, 640 Barber St, Athens, GA 30601.
