LaVerne Carroll Barber, 92, died September 6, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born August 4, 1933, in Floyd County, Georgia, LaVerne was the daughter of Mark and Cora Carroll. She attended Rome Girls High School where she was valedictorian. She then attended the University of Georgia Off-Campus Center in Rome. LaVerne was employed by Rome Bank & Trust as a Loan Officer. It was there she met and then married Allan Wedford Barber on May 11, 1963.
The newly married couple soon moved and bought their first home in Greenville, South Carolina where Allan worked as a CPA for Elliott, Davis & Co. Their daughters, Lila and Frieda, were born shortly after their move to Greenville. It was not long before Allan had an opportunity to move their young family to Athens where he and LaVerne served as a team for the University of Georgia for 35 years. She enjoyed all things UGA, including sporting events where many wonderful friendships were made. However, LaVerne’s love, devotion and dedication to her family were paramount in her life.
LaVerne served as a volunteer in the Pink Posy at Athens Regional Medical Center and UGA organizations for over 35 years. She was a long-time member of the First Baptist Church of Athens and was active in Sunday School and Wednesday Night programs during the early years of her children. But her most special interest was being a wife, mother and grandmother. A lifetime of memories were made at their Lake Burton home with her family and friends. Her love and enjoyment of her family happened when they were together at their Lake home. Her grandsons brought her much joy, and she loved spending time with them.
LaVerne is predeceased by her parents and brother, Jack Carroll. She is survived by her husband of 62 wonderful years, Allan Barber, daughters: Lila (Joey) McMillan and Frieda (Jim) Clarke and grandsons: Will, Carson and Ross McMillan and Lewis and Charles Clarke.
A graveside service will be held at Oconee Hill Cemetery on Wednesday, September 10 at 2 o’clock. Following the service, friends are invited to the home of her daughter, Frieda Clarke.
