Mrs. Cobb was born on November 27, 1927 in Greene County, GA, the daughter of the late Theodore Jackson Bowden and Ella Carson Bowden.
She was a graduate of Central School in Oconee County where she was a member of the Beta Club. She has enjoyed watching her old school house being moved to Heritage Park and renovated.
Mrs. Cobb moved to Athens in 1947 and worked at Kress. She met Jimmy Lay shortly after and they married and started their family. After several years, she returned to work beginning her 27-year career with J.C. Penney Co.
Mrs. Cobb was very involved in her community in spite of working full-time and being a wife and mother. She was a member of The Sunset Garden Club, served on the board of the YWCO, the Entres Nous Club and The Athens Pilot Club. In later years she was very active with the Athens Elks Auxiliary, the American Legion Auxiliary and the Mall Walkers.
After losing her husband, Jimmy, to cancer in 1974, she continued her career and community service. She met and married John Cobb in 1978. They enjoyed retirement traveling the country and loved Georgia football, tailgating and their Elk friends.
One of her greatest joys was her three grandchildren. They spent many fun and memorable times together. She was so proud of them. She also has been blessed with five precious great-granddaughters.
Mrs. Cobb was a member of First Baptist Church for sixty-eight years. Many will remember her as their Sunday school or Training Union teacher.
Mrs. Cobb was preceded in death by her parents; seven brothers and sister; and her husbands, James C. Lay and John G. Cobb Jr.
