

Born Feb. 22, 1956, at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas, Van was a son of the late Mary Lewis Lyon Horton and Col. Dan Heyward Horton. He is survived by his son, Robert Dan Horton of Albuquerque, N.M.; his brother, Dan Lyon Horton of Athens, Ga.; his former wife, Annette Lucero Horton of Albuquerque, N.M.; his aunt, Eva Lyon Holmes, Trenton, S.C.; his aunt and uncle, Mary Ann and Dan Lyon of Atlanta, Ga.; and several cousins.
As the child of an Army officer, Van lived in numerous locations. Following his father’s death in 1970, Van and his mother moved to Clemson, S.C., where he graduated from Daniel High School in 1974. He moved west in the mid-1980s and lived in Albuquerque, N.M., and Denver, Colo. He worked in commercial paint sales for many years.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
The family wishes to express its sincere appreciation to Dr. Ranjana Bhargava and the staff of Georgia Cancer Specialists, St. Mary’s Hospice, and the Stephens Ministry of First Presbyterian Church.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the St. Mary’s Foundation, the Cancer Foundation of Northeast Georgia, the Loran Smith Cancer Center, or other groups that provide care for those with cancer.
