

Margarett Ruth (Meg) Gunn Dure died March 11, 2016 from complications due to lung cancer. She was born September 15, 1947, daughter of Uly Samuel Gunn II and Margarett Kallmeyer Gunn Wilson, both of whom preceded her in death. Also preceding her in death were her husband, Leon Sebring Dure III, and her brother, Robert Russell Gunn II.
Educated in Clarke County public schools, she was a member of Athens High School Class of 1965. She received an AA degree from Stratford College in Danville, VA and an ABJ from the University of Georgia School of Journalism in 1969. She was a member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority.
Her career as a newspaper woman included working at the Charlottesville (VA) Daily Progress and the Athens Banner-Herald where she was Lifestyle Editor for over 15 years. She was a columnist for the Summerville (GA) News, Athens Observer and Athens Patch. Her work was cited by the Virginia Press Association, the Georgia Press Association and the National Newspaper Editors Association. She went on to host a live community affairs television program, Mornings With Meg, on WNGM-TV34, until taking the position of Director of Alumni Relations for the University Of Georgia’s Terry College of Business.
During her career days she edited Athens Regional Medical Center’s Cornerstone Magazine and Georgia Business magazine at UGA’s Terry College of Business.
In 1998, she climbed Mount LeConte, which she considered one of proudest accomplishments.
Mrs. Dure was a member of the Junior Ladies Garden Club, and a sustaining member of the Junior League of Athens and the Wednesday Study Club. She was a member of the National Society of Colonial Dames in the State of Georgia, Athens Town Committee, having served as town chairman and as a member of the state Board of Governors. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.
Surviving are her son, Frank Booker McGriff, Athens; her daughter, Margarett Gunn McGriff McIntosh (William), Savannah; sisters, Mary Gannon Gunn, Page Gunn Pate (Randy), Athens; grandson, William Lachlan McIntosh, Savannah; sister-in-law, Brent Shuford Gunn, Macon; nephews, Uly Samuel Gunn III (Jenny), Atlanta, Robert Shuford Gunn, Asheville, NC; and beloved caregiver, Belinda Lee.
A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 16 at the First Presbyterian Church with reception following in the fellowship hall.
