Mark Cross has been my downstairs neighbor for almost a decade. A gracious gentleman, he has generously given of his time and energy to enrich the lives of evetyone he encounters. We have spoken almost daily, often having long conversations as he stopped by my front porch on his way home. He has helped me shuttle vehicles home from the service department in Winder, ridden with me to the YWCO for water aerobics sessions, called ahead weekly to remind me to set trash out for him to take, and picked up monthly bills from the post office. Everyone in this building will have similar stories to share.

Mark’s topics of conversation ranged from collegiate athletics to real estate financing. Since I coached football at Georgia Tech under Bill Curry, he offered stories from the years his older brother Pete served on the athletics board there. The iPad he received for Christmas 2011 soon became his constant companion, but the love of his final years was his finicky cat. Hearing his old truck start early every morning for the five years he delivered newspapers for the Athens Banner-Herald was a ritual replaced by periodic alarm bells generated by the remote keypad of the new truck. Most of all, he shared with us the adventures of his grandchildren as they moved through prep school years into college successes.

With a disarming smile and a sincere desire to help others, Mark has meant so much to people his family will never know. Rest assured that he will be remembered for his deeds, his humor, his faithfulness, and his good cheer. Rest in peace, good friend.
