I have known Martha since we 'opened'  the old Cedar Shoals High School in 1972.  Martha was a wonderful, dear, kind person to whom I felt as close to as a sister.  I often saw her during her illness and will miss her greatly.  She was so loved by all her many friends and students throughout the years.  As I said, Martha was like a 'big sister' to me, and I will miss her very, very much.

Martha was one of a circle of Mathews cousins, spanning generations, who were very, very special to each other, as well as to many others. She was beautiful, inside and out, with grace and humor and kindness in abundance. She will be missed.

I am grieved to hear of Martha's passing. I talked to her just a few months ago and she did not mention being ill. She was such a lovely lady. We were friends through her cousin Robert Osborn. I will miss her. She is one of the last true Southern ladies.

Mrs. Lord was my teacher at Barrow School in the 6th grade 1965-66.  She was a wonderful teacher and a dear friend for many years.  I will always remember her sweet smile.

Mrs. Lord was one of my favorite teachers at CSHS! I was so sorry to learn of her passing and am sorry for your loss. What a wonderful lady who inspired many.

Martha was a special friend, indeed. 
She certainly remained positive throughout this terrible illness. I shall always admire her as a great teacher, Mother, & wife. She was a keen advisor and mentor. I loved her 
so much because of her fine qualities and compassion to lead others. She never demanded praise for any of her deeds. She wanted very little recognition, but deserved appreciation far beyond.  Rest in peace. Heaven's gain!

Martha Mathews Lord was a special person.  When I was about 5 years old and she was about 16, she was my Sunday School Teacher at Union Christian Church in Oconee County.  I can still see her smile and pretty face.  Her gentleness and kindness was always present.  Over the years we laughed and talked about the Sunday School days.   Both of us had vivid memories of those days.

Martha was a great friend and special lady.  She will be missed.

A great lady, Martha was a fine teacher and a good friend all the 27 years we lived in Athens when I taught at Cedar Shoals with her.

Mrs. Lord was one of my favorite teachers ever and specifically my 9th grade English teacher. She was also my great aunt by marriage, so I have always thought of her fondly and lovingly.  She also encouraged me to pursue specific goals as a teenager that contributed to my life-long love of books, theatre and Shakespeare.  I owe her a great debt of gratitude for my arts career and a personal tribute of love. My condolences to the entire family.  She was a fine teacher, a good person and a dear friend. And I loved calling her "Aunt Martha" even though she always told me to just call her Martha.  It was the only time I EVER disobeyed my former teacher and I think it made her smile.
