It is with heavy hearts and profound respect that we announce the passing of Michelle Thomas, fondly known to her family and friends as Shelly, on May 31, 2026, after a courageous battle with illness. Born on July 29, 1963, in Taunton, Massachusetts, Shelly's life was a testament to kindness, resilience, and a love that touched all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Michelle was the beloved daughter of Shirley and Herman Thomas, who predeceased her, and a cherished sister to Marsha and Michael. Her love and devotion extended to her niece and nephews, whom she adored deeply. Throughout her life, Shelly's sweet smile and kind heart left an indelible mark on her family and friends.
Educated with distinction, Michelle graduated from St. Joseph’s Notre Dame High School in Alameda. Her academic journey led her to San Francisco State University, where she graduated with honors as a broadcasting major. Her thirst for knowledge and dedication to helping others inspired her to further her studies at San Francisco Community College, where she became a certified radiology technician. Her career spanned decades, with Shelly making significant contributions as an X-ray technician at San Francisco General Hospital before dedicating the last 20 years of her professional life as a mammogram technician at Piedmont Athens Hospital.
Shelly's passions extended beyond her professional life. She was an avid music enthusiast with a particular fondness for R.E.M. and the Counting Crows. Her impeccable taste in music was matched only by her vast collection of Wizard of Oz memorabilia and her enduring love for Disney, which often found her exploring the wonders of Walt Disney World. Shelly's heart was as expansive as her interests; she rescued countless elderly dogs, providing them with a loving home and the care they deserved.
The essence of Shelly's spirit was her compassion, her warmth, and her unwavering kindness. These qualities ensured she left the world a better place than she found it. Her legacy of love and generosity will continue to resonate through the lives she touched.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to be made in Michelle's memory to the Conquer Cancer Foundation, an organization dedicated to advancing cancer research and supporting patients and caregivers.
