A native of Waycross, GA, Nancy was the daughter of James Albert and Violet Dawson Kellam. Her parents, husband “Chester” Witherington, sister Elizabeth Freeman and brother James Albert “Jimmy” Kellam, Jr. preceded her in death. A graduate of the University of Georgia where she began her life-long love of cheering on the Bulldogs, Nancy could be spotted in her uniform on the field each year among the alumni cheerleaders or riding in the Homecoming parade as recently as last year.
Outgoing and social, Nancy was known to carry on long conversations with friends and acquaintances she ran into who would “just not let her go.” An avid tennis and bridge player, she was active in P.E.O., Our Daily Bread, as an Alpha Delta Pi alumni and a member of Athens First United Methodist Church.
Nancy loved dancing, Diet Coke, shopping, chardonnay, buying plants but calling it gardening, and spending time at Amelia Island with her family. She is survived by her children Blake (Margaret) Witherington, Newburyport, MA; Leslie (Jeff Muscarella) Witherington, Atlanta, GA; and Carole (Bert) Lumpkin, Athens; and grandchildren Kellam and Emma Witherington, Will and Lily Muscarella, and Raleigh (Tesh) and Julianna Lumpkin.
A memorial service officiated by the Reverend Dr. Nancy Johnson will be held Monday, August 4 at 2:00 PM at Athens First United Methodist Church with a reception to follow.
As an alternate expression of sympathy, the family asks that contributions be made to the P.E.O. Continuing Education Scholarship Fund at www.peointernational.org or to Athens First United Methodist Church, 327 N. Lumpkin St, Athens, GA 30601.
Arrangements overseen by Bernstein Funeral Home.
