Shell was born on July 24, 1949, in Colorado and grew up in the Washington, D.C., area. A proud veteran of the United States Army, he served honorably from 1967 to 1971, rising to the rank of Specialist 5. As a Morse Interceptor with the Army Security Agency, he contributed to vital communications and intelligence work during the Vietnam War. His service earned him several commendations, including the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and the Meritorious Unit Commendation.
After his military service, Shell attended Georgia Tech, where he earned his degree in Civil Engineering, which was an accomplishment he held with great pride. He went on to work as a structural engineer in Atlanta for more than 30 years, contributing to major university stadiums around the South and disaster relief in Haiti.
In retirement, Shell and his wife, Joy, settled into a beautiful lake house on Lake Sinclair, where they spent two decades hosting annual Memorial Day weekend barbecues for their family and friends. Shell was a devoted husband and father, known for his warmth, his quick wit, and his love for good music, craft beer, and great company. Together, he and Joy traveled the world, visiting more than a dozen countries and creating relationships and memories that lasted a lifetime.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Julia, and his brother, Bob. He is survived by his wife Joy; sons Will and Ian; daughter Ellen; sisters JoAnne and Jean; six grandchildren; and nieces and nephews; all of whom adored him.
