A native of Jacksonville, FL, Mr. Howson was a son of the late Earl Howson and Ruth Widmer
Howson.
He was a veteran of the United States Army, liked to fish, hunt and play golf, but most
of all he loved working. He enjoyed a recent trip to Vietnam and loved spending time at his
cabin in North Carolina.
Peter Bernard Howson separated from the Army as an O-3 Captain May 1, 1974. He served
his country for 6 years 5 months 14 days. His speciality was Rotary Wing Aviator/Huey
Helicopter pilot. He served in Vietnam from July 28, 1969 to July 27, 1970.
His awards and decorations include:
National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service medal w/4 bronze stars, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal/1960 device, Army Commendation Medal, Bronze Star Medal. Air Medal (2d-17th Award) this is 17 total Air Medals, Army Aviator Badge (wings), 2 overseas Service Bars, Sharpshooter (M-14), Marksman (.45 Caliber Pistol), Expert (M-16).
To quote a long time friend, and fellow veteran, “Pete, my best friend, was a warrior. He had
strength only found in a few great men. His heart was about as big as a heart could get.”
Pete was also the founding owner of Great American, Inc. His company was his passion and his
employees were like family.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Howson was preceded in death by a brother, Tom Howson.
Survivors include his wife of 23 years, Julie Howson; children, Courtney Dunn (Nathaniel), John
Howson and Marti Lundy (Matt); and grandchildren, Ruth Dunn, Sydney Dunn, Jordan Lundy
and Shelby Lundy.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
